Player profile of TE Troy Niklas as Arizona Cardinals training camp has opened

As we have reached the second week of Arizona Cardinals training camp, we continue our annual look at the roster player by player.  I look at what they’ve done, where they are now and how I project each player’s status at the end of camp.

We go from A to Z and continue with TE Troy Niklas.  Niklas is in his second season with the Cardinals.

2014 season: Niklas played in seven games, starting two of them, as a rookie for the Cardinals in 2014.  He ended up with three catches for 38 yards.  His season was cut short by injury unfortunately after week 11 in November against the Detroit Lions.

2015 season projection: He will be a part of this team no doubt but not being able to practice for the first week or two puts him lower on the depth chart for now.  He was placed on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list to start camp but was taken off last Monday.  However, he hasn’t been able to participate in any contact yet.  Hopefully he does soon.  With guys like Darren Fells and Ifeanyi Momah playing well in practice and having Jermaine Gresham in front of you, playing time could be spotty at times.

If Niklas can stay healthy this season, then the sky is the limit for him.  He is a great blocker, which coach Bruce Arians loves, and has the hands and the body to be successful as a receiving end as well.  Hopefully he will be able to get into the full swing of things this week.  With as thin as the Cardinals have been at tight end due to injury and departures, the Cardinals could certainly use him.
