The Arizona Cardinals started making their cut down to 53-players on Friday

The Arizona Cardinals have not made any official announcements as of yet, however by 1:00 p.m. this afternoon, all of them will have been made.  The Cardinals started waiving players on Friday according to reports.

One of the biggest names cut is running back Kerwynn Williams.  As I’ve been saying all camp, he was fighting a numbers game.  With David Johnson, Chris Johnson, and Andre Ellington on the roster and then Stepfan Taylor as the fourth running back who is good on special teams, the writing was on the wall.

Hopefully Williams finds a job quickly.  Another running back, Elijhaa Penny, who rushed for 113 yards and a touchdown in Thursday night’s preseason finale, is a fan favorite.  He may be on the outside looking in before the day is over.

The Cardinals also are waiving receivers Marquis Bundy and Jaxon Shipley.  Not on the initial list Friday were receivers Chris Hubert and Brittan Golden.  Which one of those two make the 53-man roster?

Shipley is not much of a surprise, although he had a lot of fans rooting for him.  He played well in the last couple of preseason games but if you look at the overall picture, his performances in the first two preseason games may have done him in.

Corner Cariel Brooks, who struggled mightily on Thursday was let go as was safety Chris Clemons. The Cardinals are loaded at safety, so seeing Clemons cut was not a surprise unfortunately.

Linebacker Donald Butler was also amongst Friday’s casualties.  He was also in a loaded field of talent and he just didn’t do enough this preseason to jump up the depth chart.

The other cuts included tackle Rob Crisp, center Taylor Boggs, and guard Antoine McClain.  No surprises in that group.

There are more cuts to be announced today.  You may see some of these cuts return to the Cardinals practice squad.  A guy like Kerwynn Williams would fit that bill but it would be very surprising if a team doesn’t claim him for their 53-man roster.
