Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson gets huge honor from Associated Press

Arizona Cardinals running back David Johnson was named to The Associated Press’ All-Pro NFL First Team.  The thing is, he wasn’t named as First Team running back.  That honor went to Dallas Cowboys back Ezekiel Elliot.

Instead, Johnson made the first team as a “flex” player.  It is a newly created position this year to more appropriately reflect the team’s use of a player.  Johnson was named to the ALL-Pro Second Team as running back.

I’ve been seeing a lot of comments on social media about Johnson getting robbed of First-Team running back.  He did, he was robbed.  However, you can’t argue against Elliot’s numbers as well.

AP only puts one running back on the the All-Pro First Team.  Personally, I would have them both there.  Hopefully this position wasn’t created just to fit Johnson on the team.  If that is the case, then just add two backs just as the teams have two receivers.

Johnson rushed for 1,239-yards and 16 touchdowns in 2016.  He also was second on the list of Cardinals receivers with 80 receptions and 879-yards and four touchdowns.  Flex does sound appropriate but I can just hear the naysayers now, that it was only created to fit Johnson.

Either way, Johnson will be humble about it.  The fans will make more of a fuss than Johnson himself.  It is huge recognition however.

Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said the other day that Johnson could amass 200-yards from scrimmage every game.  He said he wasn’t joking as reporters chuckled.

For now we enjoy the 2,118-yards from scrimmage Johnson had in 2016.  Only bigger and better things ahead.
