Dockett is No Rod Tidwell, He’s Better

Of course we all remember the famed Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Rod Tidwell. You remember him, right?  He’s the one who wasn’t shown much love and yelled “show me the money”.

That was a movie.  Tidwell, from 1996’s Jerry Maguire, felt he wasn’t being paid what he was worth.  He was out for a big payday.  He felt he wasn’t receiving the respect from the Cardinals.

Enter real time Cardinals defensive end Darnell Dockett.  Earlier this week Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak said he was the best player he’d seen on film this season.  The Sporting News even recently named him the most tenacious defensive lineman in the NFL.  Dockett’s response was “It’d be nice if I got paid like it”.

Hmmm…sounds a lot like what we went through with Anquan Boldin.  Rod Tidwell got his money.  Boldin hasn’t received his extension yet, however, he has played nice and left the door open for the team to re-sign him.  I agree Dockett deserves his money, however his crying out “I’m trying to do whatever I can to help my team win, but I’m not doing it for the organization…I’m doing for my coach, my teammates, all the veteran guys in here, that’s it.”

I don’t know if he knows this, but playing for all those people, essentially you are playing for the organization.  I get where Dockett is coming from, but seriously, just play football dude.  He’s like little Jack Jack in The Incredibles.  Jack Jack was a strong little dude as we found out, but on the flip side he was just another crying baby.

Dockett is one of the best defensive lineman in the game.  He does deserve his money.  Whether the organization will pony up at the end of the year remains to be seen.  There’s one way to help that though, continue to be the best.  Dockett is better than Tidwell, Boldin, anyone else that is looking for theirs.  Just go out and play and let that speak for itself!
