Arizona Cardinals linebacker John Abraham has left the team. He suffered a concussion in the first half of Monday night’s game, a 18-17 victory over the San Diego Chargers.
As of Wednesday afternoon, Abraham was mulling retirement. No other information on the leave has been provided at this time. The Cards were granted a roster exemption and re-signed linebacker Marcus Benard, who was cut back on August 30th in the final cut down to the 53-man limit.
Abraham, who joined the Cards late in training camp due to a DUI and subsequent rehab he received in Georgia, never really got started this season. He led the team with 11.5 sacks in 2013 but after missing much of camp was a concern heading into the regular season. He is in his 15th NFL season.
Furthermore, Abraham has a history with concussions, so I imagine that combined with everything else with age and late start to the season for him, has left him with questions to ponder. Regardless of how you feel about his play late in the preseason or the predictions of gloom and doom for him I was reading the other night, he is a human being first. I hope he makes this decision for what’s best for him. The Cards will be able to go on. They will miss him no doubt, but the Cards will be fine.
More information as it becomes available but for now, let’s just all hope for the best for him.
