Arizona Cardinals: Surviving Raiders QB Derek Carr

Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr has played like a seasoned veteran at times so far early in the 2014 season

Earlier in the week Oakland Raiders quarterback said he wasn’t going to be afraid to throw at Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson.  The way Carr has been slinging the ball, that should not come as a shocking statement.  It also doesn’t hurt that Peterson has not played up to the best of his ability so far this season.

Carr lit up the San Diego Chargers last week, throwing for four touchdowns.  He was 18-34 for 282 yards for a 107.7 quarterback rating.  His quarterback rating for the season is 81.8.  He didn’t play well against the Miami Dolphins but played fairly well in his debut against the New York Jets with two touchdowns and no interceptions.

The thing is, Carr is learning and learning fast.  He’s nowhere near lights out, yet.  However he’s playing better than some other rookies.  You like a quarterback with the attitude of Carr.  Maybe he doesn’t know any better but I like a quarterback who isn’t afraid to go out there and take to his opponent without fear.

There was some indication this week that the Cards might have been inclined to take Carr in the second-round of the NFL Draft back in May if he was still available.  Some thought the Cards might even pull the trigger on him in the first round.  Certainly he would have thrived under Bruce Arians and imagine if that’s how things had turned out.

The Raiders have had 18 different quarterbacks in the last 11 seasons.  Their long search for a starting quarterback who will stay awhile may be over.  Hopefully Patrick Peterson and the rest of the Cards corners have taken notice this week.
