Arizona Cardinals: 8 head coaches ranked
By Scott Allen
3. Dave McGinnis
McGinnis arguably was the most popular head coach with the Cardinals up to the point of his tenure from 2000-2003. Unfortunately his teams never fared so well on the field.
In his four seasons McGinnis won just 17 games. However much of that can be blamed on poor draft picks and lack of talent on the field. McGinnis only had so much to work with, especially in the quarterback department.
What made McGinnis end up high on this list though was his relationship with players, fans, and the media. He was loved by many. He was honest and never threw anyone under the bus. This was partly why the Cardinals stayed with him for four seasons. They knew despite the poor record on the field, McGinnis was a good coach who just wasn’t dealt the best hand.
The best season McGinnis had in the desert was in 2001 when the team finished 7-9. Going into December they were still in the playoff hunt. They were 7-8 before dropping a 20-17 heartbreaker to the Redskins in the season finale.
After Arizona, McGinnis moved on to be the linebackers coach for the Tennessee Titans for eight seasons. He is now the assistant head coach for the Rams, where he has been since 2012. The good ones will always remain around as long as they want to be.
