Arizona Cardinals profiles: Matthias Farley
By Scott Allen
The Arizona Cardinals are two weeks away from opening training camp in Glendale
We continue our annual look at player by player from A to Z on the current Arizona Cardinals roster as we are now entering the final stages of the offseason before the start of training camp. The next stop is training camp on July 28th.
In this profile we look at safety Matthias Farley. He is an undrafted free agent out of Notre Dame.
2015: Farley spent most of last season as a backup at Notre Dame despite playing in 52 games and making 26 starts in his four years there. Last season he started just three games.
Despite all that he still had some good career numbers. He made 192 tackles and ended up with eight career interceptions. He was a team captain last season as well.
2016: He will be one of the interesting ones to watch. His size doesn’t spell NFL but his talent says he has a chance. He stands at just 5’10.
Being smaller likely gives him little chance to make the 53-man roster as the Cardinals have said they want to get younger, quicker, and taller at the position. He is definitely younger.
Is he big enough to make the roster? He will likely have to show something special come training camp to be given serious consideration. His experience in a big-time college program like Notre Dame definitely helps but it may not be enough to make this roster.
He could be another one of those players that surprises early on and could be given a chance somewhere else. I wouldn’t shut down his chances in Arizona completely but it will be tough.
