Arizona Cardinals: Just say no to shorter overtime
By Scott Allen
A new rule could be in place in 2017 that would shorten overtime for the Arizona Cardinals and the rest of the NFL
That epic five-quarter tie the Arizona Cardinals had with the Seattle Seahawks may end up being five minutes shorter in 2017. According to cbssports.com, the NFL is reportedly ready to discuss a change to overtime rules next week at their meetings in Phoenix.
Hopefully the Cardinals balk at such a rule change. While yes that 75-minute 6-6 tie with the Seahawks seemed like it last two days the fact is there was a lot of action those last five minutes. Both teams failed to make chip-shot field goals but had their chances to score otherwise.
The proposed rule change would set overtime for regular season and preseason games at 10 minutes instead of the current 15 minutes. Playoff games would remain at 15 minutes.
For consistency purposes, it should just remains 15 minutes all of the time. If a change truly is necessary, then change it to 10 all the time. It is already confusing enough for some players.

Remember when former Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb back in 2008 didn’t even know games could end in ties? Yeah, that’s how confusing it can get for some.
If they are trying to make the game safer, which I’m all for, this doesn’t really do much for that. If they are trying to make games end quicker, does cutting five minutes of overtime really accomplish that feat? Not really. Not with all of the television timeouts these days.
I’m all for trying to improve the game. Every year the NFL tries to tinker with the rules and that I appreciate as you never want the game to become stagnant.
However this is just one idea that should be left alone. I prefer no ties in the NFL and adopt something similar to college where each team gets at least one possession that starts from the opponents 25.
