Arizona Cardinals: All I Want for Draftmas
By Jeremy Meek
Patrick Mahomes has the tools to be a huge star in the NFL
There’s no arguing the fact that the Cardinals need a quarterback soon. Carson Palmer is likely playing in his final season, and there is no feasible replacement on the roster. Patrick Mahomes is a potential homerun.
This year’s quarterback class is a mixed bag, and there are no sure things. Each of the big four, and beyond, has a flaw. However, Mahomes has the traits that could wind up making him an elite player. He has a cannon for an arm, he is deadly accurate when he sets himself and throws, and he can ad lib under pressure with the best of them.
Obviously, there are mechanical worries that need addressed. The tape shows a number of times where Mahomes threw off his back foot, or without setting his feet, and the results weren’t good. In the NFL, they’d be disastrous. However, they can be fixed. Derek Carr has the same types of issues, and he was my favorite quarterback in his class too. That turned out OK.
This year’s group of passers is an interesting case study. The top four are all over the place in terms of projection, and Mahomes could go anywhere from top ten, to in the second round. He’s my 11th overall player, and I’d take the chance in round one.
