5. First career interception – 2013

It was only three games into his career when Mathieu picked up his first career interception.  He did it in a loss to the New Orleans Saints in front of a crowd that knew him well from his LSU playing days.

It wasn’t a necessarily pretty game for the Cardinals as they lost 31-7 on the road.  Drew Brees had three touchdowns on this Sunday afternoon at The Superdome.

One mistake he did make though was throwing in the direction of Mathieu.  He was ready for him and made a nice leaping interception in the end zone over Saints receiver Lance Moore.

Mathieu also had nine tackles on this day, second on the team behind Karlos Dansby’s 12.  The interception though was the defensive highlight for the Cardinals who fell to 1-2 on the season after this loss.

The interception was one of just two he had in his rookie season.  He was just making his mark though.
