Zane Gonzalez – K
Last December, Arizona replaced the struggling Zane Gonzalez with a vastly experienced placekicker. Mike Nugent took over for the former Cleveland Browns draft pick, who suffered a mysterious back injury during the season’s 13th week.
Some speculated that the Cards had simply soured on the 25-year-old Gonzalez. The former Arizona State University alum had missed several clutch kicks in 2020, and it’s likely that the club wanted a more dependable option for the playoff run.
The feeling that the Cardinals had given up on Gonzalez was proven accurate back in March, when the Texas native was released a couple of weeks before free agency. Keim addressed the vacancy at the spot by acquiring Matt Prater, a 36-year-old who has made 83.2 percent of his field-goal attempts during a 14-year stay in the NFL.
