One of the biggest decisions by general manager Monti Ossenfort and the new Arizona Cardinals regime was surrounding the quarterback position, as Kyler Murray’s lofty contract was not doing them any favors.

Ultimately, Ossenfort, along with new head coach Mike LaFleur, opted to move off of the seven-year veteran in favor of a new signal caller.

This was widely expected after Murray only started five games in 2025 before sustaining what would turn out to be a season-ending foot injury in Week 5. The Cardinals won only five games that season, and it was tough to swallow considering the talent they had on that side of the ball.

Murray would go on to sign with the Minnesota Vikings on a one-year deal, but despite the divorce, LaFleur gave props to the duel-threat quarterback while also acknowledging that change was needed.

“Like I’ve said about Kyler, a lot of respect for him. He did some good stuff here, but sometimes it’s time for change for both sides. Again, wish him the best. Will never wish ill will on anybody.” — Mike LaFleur

In his time in the desert, Murray earned two Pro Bowl selections, as well as one playoff appearance that ended in a 34–11 first-round exit to the Los Angeles Rams.

The change was definitely needed, as the Cardinals were looking to turn over a new leaf after a dismal season. But that doesn’t mean that there isn’t mutual respect. After all, Murray was one of the most exciting players that Arizona had seen in quite some time.
