I realize in this day and age in the NFL, it’s hard to just bring in someone, at any position, and perform at an acceptable level on a consistent basis without much practice. However, I also realize sometimes resting on your laurels can get you into a lot of trouble. The Arizona Cardinals appear ready right now to just stick with what they got after the loss of running back Ryan Williams for the season.
When the shocking news came down yesterday, to me it was even a bigger shock the Cards decided for now they were sticking with what they got. Now, there isn’t a ton of options out there, however there are some. A guy like Tim Hightower, who knows the system, is out there. Do you want a guy not playing right now? I say it’s better than just doing nothing. Don’t get me wrong, I like LaRod Stephens-Howling, William Powell, and Alfonso Smith but they aren’t experienced every down backs.
There are other free agents out there too, guys like Joseph Addai. They could also explore a trade but I don’t see the Cards doing that. How much do they have to give up to make a trade for a backup running back who could start for others? It is an interesting question to ponder. At this point, it’s too late to do something for Buffalo, but with a really tough stretch coming up it would behoove them to explore their options, especially if they are wanting to continue to have playoff aspirations.
