Neil Lomax

Lomax played his entire career with the Cardinals.  From 1981 through 1989 he was the starting quarterback.

He was drafted in 1981 out of Portland State.  He made the Pro Bowl twice in 1984 and in 1987. It was in 1988 when the franchise moved west to Arizona where many local fans will remember him well.

He lead the Cardinals in their first season in the desert in 1988 to a 7-4 record and good enough for first place in the NFC East at the time.  Unfortunately he got injured and the Cardinals dropped their final five games that season to finish 7-9.

It didn’t get much better from there as he eventually was forced to retire in 1990 due to hip problems.  He eventually had to have hip replacement surgery.

However during his time with the Cardinals, Lomax finished his career with an 82.9 quarterback rating.  He threw 136 touchdowns against 90 interceptions.  He threw for 22,771 yards.

He wasn’t as flashy as a Joe Montana but he certainly knew how to throw a football and knew how to find his receivers.  Despite the fact he had a nickname for yours truly, calling me Pugsley during my time working with the Cardinals in 1989, Lomax was a huge part of the Cardinals history and maybe someday that will be further recognized.
