Drew Stanton played very well last week against the Oakland Raiders

When the Cardinals signed Blaine Gabbert this offseason, it was a signal to some that Drew Stanton’s backup quarterback spot wasn’t safe. Gabbert had a fantastic game in the Hall of Fame game, and the competition got even hotter.

Last week, Stanton saw his first action of the preseason, and made the most of it. He completed 11 of 15 passes for 112 yards and a touchdown. He was impressive, and only strengthened his claim to the number two spot. Meanwhile, Gabbert wasn’t quite as flashy as he was the week before.

Stanton should see plenty of action once again this week. He’s certainly the favorite to retain the backup job into the season, and if he performs well again, it’s pretty much a certainty. He not only knows the system, but he has won games when called on to start.
