Arizona Cardinals vs Washington: Good, bad, ugly
By Scott Allen
The Ugly
Penalties – the penalties just need to stop. Many teams would have taken advantage of all the bad penalties on Sunday.
They had 11 penalties for 97-yards. Not only the yards there but the amount of penalties were disturbing. On the other side of the ball, Washington only had 6 penalties.
The Cardinals had two big penalties on their first drive. First an illegal block by Kevin Beachum on 2nd and 2 from the Washington 19 all of a sudden turned into a 2nd and 12 from the 29.
Then the next one three plays later nullified a Kyler Murray touchdown run. On 1st and goal from the 8-yard line, Murray ran in for the score but Dan Arnold was holding.
The call pushed the ball back to the 11. Three plays after that, Murray found DeAndre Hopkins in the end zone for his first touchdown reception of the season.
Coach Kliff Kingsbury again re-iterated the point on Monday. He said the one spot they must improve on was the penalties. He knows just like the rest of us that the Cardinals got away with it on Sunday but once the competition gets stronger, the Cardinals will not be able to sustain the success unless they cut down on the fouls.
