Penei Sewell

Chances are, Sewell goes fourth overall to the Cincinnati Bengals given the team’s massive need to upgrade the offensive line. But the Cardinals have also seen major issues on their line, and would benefit from drafting Sewell.

And while they drafted Josh Jones in hopes that he would someday lock down the right tackle spot, he didn’t show much over his rookie season. So far, he’s nothing more than a reserve swing tackle.

The clear deterrent from drafting Sewell is that they already have a fantastic left tackle in D.J. Humphries, who has proven more than capable of protecting quarterback Kyler Murray‘s blindside. And chances are, NFL teams see Sewell as a left tackle of the future. But Sewell can also anchor the right tackle position and do so well. And right now, the Cardinals need a legitimate right tackle on a weak line.

Since Sewell is a projected top-five or at worst, projected top ten pick, the Cardinals will have to give up a lot of draft capital and perhaps a contributing player to take Sewell. Plus, the question always bodes as to whether they’d hope to give up so much for a prospect who will probably spend the first part of his career at right tackle while Humphries anchors the left.

However, the Cardinals had issues all over the offensive line, despite Murray’s lower sack rate. They struggled all season long with penalties and mental errors. So replacements are coming to the line. The Cardinals also can’t afford to opt for another patchwork job. So if they’re willing to give up some capital and find a way to leapfrog the Bengals for Sewell, they’re getting a surefire prospect.
