Alford is second on the cornerback depth chart

Sitting behind Malcolm Butler on the depth chart, Robert Alford has a lot to prove. He had to prove he can be in the top four rotation. Byron Murphy is listed on first string on the other side with Darqueze Dennard behind him.

Alford was signed as a free agent in 2019 and hasn’t seen a single down of the regular season yet. He had season-ending injuries each of the last two preseasons.

Fans were surprised to see him return in 2020 after the first injury. Some were even surprised to a greater extent that he was back on the roster this preseason.

Alford has competition. Tay Gowan, a rookie from Central Florida, and Jace Whittaker, a first-year player out of the University of Arizona, have the ability to turn some heads. There is also veteran Daryl Worley and rookie Marco Wilson out of the University of Florida.

His spot on the depth chart aside, let’s just hope Alford can make it out of this preseason injury-free. That in itself should be considered a victory for him.
