Murray was ranked as the No. 21 starting quarterback in the league, with all signs pointing to him being the starter.

The aftershock of the Kyler Murray release is almost fully behind us, as both the Arizona Cardinals and the Minnesota Vikings, for that matter, near the start of training camp, which begins near the end of July.

Both teams will endure some intense quarterback battles, as the quarterback room of each team is full of depth. It has been obvious that Jacoby Brissett would start for the Cardinals, but it is still up in the air who will start for the Vikings. However, Pro Football Focus seemingly revealed who that will be.

“As has been the case throughout his career, Murray flashed his immense talent in 2025 before injuries once again cut his season short. He was limited to just five starts last year, and he has played a full season only once since 2021. He fell out of favor in Arizona and is now competing with J.J. McCarthy for the starting job in Minnesota…Murray’s talent is still tantalizing when he is healthy and in rhythm. As recently as the 2024 regular season, he ranked seventh among qualifying quarterbacks in big-time throws (27) and second in yards per carry (7.3). In five starts last season, he earned a respectable 72.2 PFF passing grade.”

It seems as if Kyler Murray will be stealing the QB1 spot away from J.J. McCarthy, who is already entering his third year. McCarthy sustained a torn meniscus, which forced him to scrap his rookie season, and he struggled mightily in year two.

It will be interesting to see what happens with McCarthy if Murray indeed wins the starting job.
