As camps open around the NFC West, including the Arizona Cardinals, there is a lot of news as well.
St. Louis Rams: The Rams signed first round draft pick Sam Bradford just in time for the first full squad workout on Saturday. He signed a huge contract with $50 million guaranteed. This is great news for Rams fans and all fans of teams who have yet to sign their first rounders. Well, the great news is he signed, not so sure about all that guaranteed money for a player who has yet to play a down in the NFL and is coming off a season ending injury his senior season at Oklahoma.
San Francisco 49'ers: The Niners signed all their remaining unsigned draft picks on Friday. That is a much better start for the Niners than last season when they had to deal with a lengthy holdout from receiver Michael Crabtree.
Seattle Seahawks: The Seahawks signed offensive lineman Chester Pitts, formerly of the Houston Texans. The Hawks need all the help they can get on that offensive line, especially protecting an aging and oft-injured Matt Hasselbeck.

Reporting day today in Flagstaff. Some happening’s in and around all that is the Arizona Cardinals today.
- Second round pick Daryl Washington signed his contract today, leaving only first rounder Dan Williams as the only unsigned pick. His signing I would imagine would come soon since those around his pick have been signed. He could be slotted right in. Williams is only one of three draft picks in the entire division not yet signed. C’mon Cards – let’s get it done!
- Larry Fitzgerald tweeted that he and Kerry Rhodes hopped a plane to Flagstaff to get to camp on time
- Darnell Dockett, who is looking for a new contract, announced he will report to camp on time after talking to coach Ken Whisenhunt. That’s great news! We need him!
First practice tomorrow afternoon in Flagstaff on the Northern Arizona University Campus.

Friday is reporting day for the Arizona Cardinals. First practice is on Saturday afternoon in Flagstaff.
Only first round pick Dan Williams and second-round pick Daryl Washington are unsigned. Word is Washington is close.
It’s been a long off-season with all the changes that have taken place. Let’s remember even with all the changes, there is still a lot of familiar faces on the team ready to help lead the Cards to a third straight NFC West divisional title. That task seems to be tougher this year, but definitely not impossible.
Saturday’s practice will be from 3:20-4:45.

Many football fans in this country, many living right here in the Phoenix area and around Arizona, can barely afford to take themselves and their family to one game, much less three. I am included in that group of fans.
As the Arizona Cardinals single-game tickets go on sale this Saturday at ticketmaster.com and all Ticketmaster outlets, the Cards want you to know not every game is available by itself. They’ve once again unveiled their “Protect the Nest” plan. I’m here to tell you to protect your wallet because that means you will be purchasing tickets for three games. That’s $150 minimum for one person. One person I repeat.
I get what the Cards are doing, don’t get me wrong. I’m not an idiot. What I don’t get though is why the Cards feel it necessary to “blackmail” fans into buying tickets to three games if you want to go see the Dallas Cowboys on Christmas night or the San Francisco 49′ers on Monday Night Football on November 29th? So, in essence, there are no “single-game” tickets available for the Cowchips and Niners. I think that is wrong. The Cards will get the support from fans either way, no doubt. There will be people that can afford those packages. For huge Cards fans John Doe and his son who are on a limited income or out of a job, they won’t be seeing either the Chips or Niners. The fact is, there is a chance they won’t even see them on television and that’s the whole point of this package – to make sure people show up for the Raiders game, for the Buccaneers game, for the preseason game against the Texans. I just call it blackmail. I call it discriminatory, economically discriminatory.
Sure, I could still find myself at either one of the big games by going to Ebay or Stubhub, but again, that’s not the point. The point from the Cards perspective is that they are saying they are afraid they won’t sell out those other games and if you want to enjoy them on tv, then we need some of you to dish out hundreds, if not thousands, of dollars in doing so. You want to find something to protest people of Arizona? Stop wasting your time downtown protesting a law that isn’t even going to take effect. Go protest the “protect”. Of course neither protest will work, that’s why I don’t waste my time on either, but I do feel it worth my time to express my feelings in writing to the legions of fans who will be with me. For those of you not with me, and I know you are out there as well, I say congratulations for being rich. I guess your money will go a long way in deciding whether or not I get to watch the Cards in front of my tv on home game days.

I had the chance to interview new Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Andre Roberts, the third round draft pick from The Citadel.I asked him some questions about his school, his new team, and advice he’s received so far.
Raising Zona: Even though training camp is just about to start, with the mini camps you’ve completed, what differences have you noticed between college and NFL?
Roberts: “The size of the play book is a big difference and the speed of everything is definitely different. And everyone is fast.”
Raising Zona: With the departure of Anquan Boldin, that moves everyone up one on the depth chart. Do you believe you have a great chance to be this team’s number 3 or 4 receiver?
Roberts: “I do believe I have a great chance at being the number 3 or 4. I just need to learn my plays and gain the confidence of the quarterback and I believe I’ll be right there in the hunt.”
Raising Zona: Given your talents and numbers at The Citadel, the Cardinals selected you in the third round. Do you feel like you still are going to have to prove a lot to people given your size?
Roberts: “Definitely. I believe I’m going to have to prove a lot because I don’t think everybody believes in my abilities to play so I’m ready to prove people wrong.”
Raising Zona: I read you really wanted nothing to do with a military career. Why did you choose to go to The Citadel?
Roberts: “Because I had a military background with both my parents, and I knew it would be a good structure environment coming out of high school.”
Raising Zona: Weren’t there other FCS schools you could have gone too?
Roberts: “Yes there were”
Raising Zona: That being said, are you happy with the choice to go to The Citadel?
Roberts: “I am happy with the choice I made. I got my degree and it helped me grow as a person.”
Raising Zona: Have you had the chance to talk with other receivers on the Cardinals roster yet and if so, what advice have they provided you?
Roberts: “Yes of course I’ve talked to all the receivers. As far as advice, they’ve told me that things don’t happen in a day or a week – things take time and don’t get frustrated if you’ve had a bad practice. Just make sure not to make the same mistakes and progressively get better. “
I thank Andre for taking the time out of his busy training camp preparations to answer some questions. Good luck to him and the rest of the team heading to Flagstaff this week! Click here to join his fans on his Facebook page!

With the Arizona Cardinals training camp getting going next weekend, the talk will start to heat up on Matt Leinart as the new Cards starting quarterback. Does Leinart make it through all of camp as the starter? Will Derek Anderson push him at all in camp? Will we see some nice surprises from backups John Skelton and Max Hall? They are all good questions.
First, I think Leinart makes it through camp as the starter unless something drastic happens, you know, like he accidentally hyper extends his arm or has a freak ironing accident. The question will come up a lot, but ultimately I think coach Ken Whisenhunt gives him a shot in at least a couple of games. He'll be a on short leash though. Even with the NFL's softest schedule, the Cards can't afford to get off with two or three losses to the season, especially given that the St. Louis Rams and Oakland Raiders are two of the first three opponents.
All Cards fans eyes will be focused. This will be an intriguing battle between Leinart and Anderson. What happens if Anderson performs so well in the preseason that it will be difficult to ignore? Chances are that won't happen, but you never know. There is a constant evaluation that will go on. I say you have to give Leinart every chance to lose the job though. Five days and counting.

The way Nate Davis from the USA Today puts it, the Arizona Cardinals are in trouble this season, heading into the start of training camp next Friday. Saying because the Cardinals didn’t “adequately fill the vacancies (from the players that departed)”, this is a defining season for Cards coach Ken Whisenhunt. He also says this is Matt Leinart’s time to prove his first-round worthiness. That much I will agree with him on.
He goes on to say the Cards are dangerously old at some positions and dangerously young at others. He fails to identify which ones he considers for both. Hey, as far as I am concerned, if they are between the ages of 20 and 40, they all will be old and young at some time. Just lace them up and get out there and see what you can do.
We all know there are going to be a lot of expectations still, given the performance of those that are still on the roster from the last two or three seasons, however we all also know there are a lot of questions. That’s ok, that’s what training camp will hopefully do, answer some of those questions.
Don’t count these Cards out before anything starts. You can reserve that judgement until Leinart starts a regular season game and gets picked off four times in a blowout loss. The philospophy hasn’t changed, just the players. Given the schedule, the Cards should be just fine. At least, I hope so.
